Bluestones Staffing

Main purpose of job

To be responsible to the City Protection Manager, through the Pest Control Manager, for carrying out the full range of pest control work, disinfecting work and drain testing in an effective and efficient manner and in accordance with all set procedures.

To carry out all duties in accordance with specified time and quality targets.

Essential criteria

Qualifications and experience

Applicants must, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms:

  • have a full, current driving licence (B category) which enables them to drive in Northern Ireland or have access to a form of transport which enables them to meet the requirements of the post in full[1];
  • have a minimum of five GCSEs (grades A-C) including English, or equivalent qualifications; and
  • have a relevant qualification such as BPC/RSPH (Level 2) Certificate in Pest Control or equivalent.

Applicants must also be able to demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples on the application form, that they have, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms, at least one year’s relevant experience in each of the following areas:

(i)       pest control operations, programmes or treatments of insects that pose a risk to public health; and

(ii)      dealing directly with members of the public.

[1] Please be advised that this alternative is a ‘reasonable adjustment’ specifically for applicants with disabilities who, as a result of their disability, are unable to hold a full, current driving licence.  However please also be advised that, given the business need for the post holder to drive council-owned vehicles on a daily basis in order to carry out a programme of pest control work and fulfil the duties of the post then the ‘reasonableness’ of this adjustment will be thoroughly considered prior to any appointment being made.

Special skills and attributes

Applicants must be able to demonstrate evidence of the following skills and attributes, which may be tested at interview:

  • Customer care skills: an awareness of the importance of responding to the needs of customers and an awareness of the need to create a good impression to enhance and protect the image of the council and regular public contact.
  • Health and safety knowledge: an understanding of the importance of personal responsibility for health and safety compliance, risk assessment and being capable of working in confined spaces and able to do work involving heights.
  • Decision making skills: the ability to make decisions about individual working and to make operational decisions that affect others and contribute to the achievement of operational objectives.
  • Written communication skills: the ability to write clearly and complete standard documents.
  • Communication skills: the ability to effectively communicate with colleagues and line management.
  • Team working skills: the ability to be an effective team member, contributing to the success of the team and the achievement of objectives.

Shortlisting criteria

In addition to the above qualifications and experience, Belfast City Council reserves the right to shortlist only those candidates who, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms, can demonstrate by providing personal and specific examples on the application form, that they have at least two years’ relevant experience in each of the areas outlined above, (i) and (ii).
