Bluestones Staffing is working with Lisburn council to recruit a Research Officer.
KEY PURPOSE
To provide an historical research service for the general functions of the Museum, including the development of exhibitions, and to answer research enquiries from the public through the management of the Museum’s reference libraries, archival collections and any associated resources. The post holder will act as a Duty Officer on a rota basis for the Centre/Museum; and when acting in this capacity be responsible for the safe and efficient control and management of the facility, staff and public. This will also involve acting as a first aider.
The post holder will undertake any other duties relevant to the post reasonably determined by the Museum Services Manager to meet changing business needs or requirements.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To source and research material/information on the history of the Irish linen industry, Ireland, Ulster, and the local history of the Lagan Valley region, as required, and to develop and maintain such information within the reference library to service the functions of the Museum.
To contribute to exhibitions by writing and developing original material based on primary and secondary research; research information for storyline scripts; compose write, edit and proof reading display texts and captions, and; develop exhibition promotional support material as required.
To respond to research enquiries from the public, students, academics and historians, commercial bodies, scientists, media and production companies, and public bodies, which are unrelated to the artefact collections, and develop this material for archive.
To develop, update and produce content for the Museum’s website and social media platforms. In conjunction with the Museum Services Manager, formulate and oversee the museum’s digital media and social media strategy. To prepare and edit text for Museum promotional activities / advertising material and organise the placing of such material, thereby engaging with external bodies involved in design and production and with commercial outlets.
To manage the development of, through acquisitions, conservation and cataloguing, the reference library and archival collections, the LIRA library, and also the non-accessioned reference resources such as maps, microfilms and audio-visual tapes, to facilitate study access by Museum staff and visitors.
Give historical, library-related, and research-related presentations and talks to groups visiting the Museum and to external meetings.
To collaborate with curatorial staff in the production of Museum publications by researching, writing, editing and producing material, and liaising with external organisations engaged in design, procurement and production. Identify archival material suitable for publication.
Ensure all Health & Safety legislation, published relevant guidelines and Council Health & Safety policies and procedures are complied with in relation to the services and activities within the facility

Education
A third level qualification for example degree, NVQ level 5 (or equivalent) in modern history or social and economic history (or equivalent).
A 2.1 Honours Degree (or equivalent) in modern history or social and economic history (or equivalent).
A post graduate degree (or equivalent) that has involved primary research in one or more of the following:
· Modern Irish History;
· Irish Social and Economic History.
