Main purpose of job

To be responsible to the Assistant Fleet Managers and / or other appropriate officers for the provision of an efficient and effective tyre-fitting service, and for the provision of general labouring duties within the workshop.

Essential criteria

Driving licence and experience

Applicants must, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms:

a)     possess a full, current driving licence that enables them to drive in Northern Ireland; and

b)     be able to demonstrate on the application form, by providing personal and specific examples, that they have at least one year’s experience of undertaking HGV/LGV tyre repairs,

Please note, all eligible applicants must undergo and successfully pass a driving assessment.

Special skills and attributes

Applicants must be able to demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples, that they possess the following special skills and attributes which will be tested at interview:

  • Health and safety knowledge: a good understanding of the health and safety responsibilities attached to the post to ensure the safety of other council employees and members of the public.
  • Work planning and organisational skills: the ability to operationally prioritise and schedule work in light of competing demands and tight deadlines, and to develop and maintain effective and efficient work management processes.
  • Initiative and team working skills: the ability to work effectively and flexibly as part of a team and also using personal initiative as necessary. The ability to be an effective team member at a basic level, contributing to the success of the team and achievement of objectives.
  • Analysis and decision making skills: the ability to make day-to-day operational decisions about work priorities.
  • Written communication skills: good basic handwriting with the ability to complete standard forms clearly.
  • Oral communication skills: the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and line management including clearly conveying service issues.
  • Customer care skills: good inter-personal skills with the ability to deal with and respond to the needs of both internal and external customers whilst enhancing the reputation of the council.

Short-listing criterion

In addition to the above driving licence and experience, Belfast City Council reserves the right to shortlist only those applicants who can demonstrate on the application form, by providing personal and specific examples, that they have, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms, at least two years’ experience of undertaking HGV/LGV tyre repairs.
