BSNI is working with the council to recruit a crematorium technician, this is a temporary role for 12 weeks

Main purpose of job
Responsible to the Cemeteries and Crematorium Manager, through the Senior Crematorium Technician for the efficient and effective delivery of functions relating to The Burial Grounds Regulations 1992 and The Cremation (Belfast) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1961.
Receive funerals and services showing tact, sympathy, compassion and respect to visitors and maintaining good customer awareness and dignified working relationships with funeral directors, ministers of religion and mourners, thus ensuring an atmosphere of reverence is maintained at all times.
Undertake chapel duties and be responsible for the smooth operation of the Crematorium, as required, for example, checking the daily list of services, assisting in the funeral service, ensuring webcasting/audio visual equipment is switched on and off, playing music and ensuring all areas are maintained, clean and tidy – internally and externally.
Undertake duties involved in the cremation of the dead in accordance with recognised code of practice, for example, administration work, operation of cremator equipment and ensuring that all regulations are being adhered to, to the highest operating standards.
Summary of responsibilities and personal duties
Cremator Duties
Undertake the necessary identification checks of the deceased, following all procedures before cremation.
Operate the cremator and any ancillary equipment within the established principles and guidelines for burial and cremation.
Understand and have the ability to operate cremators in compliance with all legal protocol and approved standards of operation, for example, ICCM, COTS, CTTS and CPE.
Assist in maintaining the day-to-day operational standards of the crematorium to ensure the service is delivered to the highest standards and to statutory requirements.
Deliver the role in an efficient and effective manner in accordance and in compliance with health and safety requirements, policies and risk assessments, e.g., COSHH, manual, handling, and ensure that all accident reporting procedures are appropriately applied.
Ensure safe operation and routine maintenance of cremators and auxiliary equipment such as fans, smoke indicators and other similar equipment, including minor repairs and identifying and reporting any irregularities with equipment.
Ensure safe operation, routine maintenance and cleanliness of reducing machine and miscellaneous equipment such as catafalque etc and ensure the cremator room and other areas within the Crematorium are kept clean.
Ensure the appropriate storage of ashes prior to disposal, to check ashes for final disposal, to pack ashes for despatch and to remove metal objects from cremated remains. To dispose of cremated remains as instructed, including the burial and scattering of ashes in the cemetery.
Ensure that all administration associated with cremations is accurate and completed and to assist with the collation of information for reports, registers etc., as and when required.
Comply at all times with the Code of Cremation Practice as laid down by the Federation of British Cremation Authorities and the Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 and appropriate legislation.
Chapel Duties
11. Clean the chapel, waiting rooms, entrance hall and other ancillary rooms. All wooden surfaces must be dusted and polished daily and floral displays maintained.
12. Check the daily list of services and ensure that the chapel is prepared according to the type of service that will be conducted. To set out correctly the times of the services and the names of the deceased onto the daily information board.
13. On the arrival of the cortege at the crematorium, to show the family mourners to their seats in the chapel and assist as required with the transfer of the coffin from the hearse to the catafalque.
14. Check the name of the coffin plate against that on his or her sheet, to ensure the correct coffin has arrived, before the coffin enters the Crematorium.
15. Ensure the correct placing of the coffin onto the catafalque by the family or funeral directors.
16. Assist with the daily operation of the webcasting equipment for each cremation sermon following the appropriate processes and procedures.
17. Assist in the funeral service such as, making short announcements and pressing the committal button at the appropriate time.
18. Operate and coordinate different music formats, operate audio visual equipment if requested, to meet the requirements of both the minister and family representatives during the funeral service.
19. Escort the mourners from the chapel and crematorium at the end of the service.
20. Maintain good relations with Ministers, Funeral Directors, mourners and other visitors to the Crematorium.
21. Ensure that all public areas are neat and tidy between services so that the individual aspect of every service is maintained, for example, straightening up of hymn books, mopping the entrance hall and lifting indoor / outdoor litter.
22. Clean the Book of Remembrance Room on a daily basis and every morning turn the page in the book.
General Duties
Undertake key-holding duties at the Crematorium as and when required.
Undertake administrative duties, liaising with the bereavement booking office and issuing ashes to customers, as and when required.
Be available for emergency cover as required.
Assist the management team to respond to all routine correspondence, enquiries and complaints.
Undertake periodic stock taking of urns and cremator parts periodically.
Deputise for the Senior Crematorium Technician in their absence as required.
Participate in all induction and in-service training provided by Belfast City Council and in the induction and support of all newly appointed staff and other human resource management policies and procedures, as appropriate, including, absence management, disciplinary and grievance procedure.
Act in accordance with the council and departmental policies and procedures including customer care, equal opportunities, health and safety, safeguarding and any pertinent legislation.
Undertake the duties in such a way as to enhance and protect the reputation and public profile of the council.
Undertake such other relevant duties as may from time to time be required.
