BSNI have a fantastic opportunity for Belfast Council for a Pest Officer

Hours: Monday to Friday, 9am-5.30pm

Rate of pay: £13.93 phr

Main purpose of job

To be responsible to the City Protection Manager, through the Pest Control Manager, for carrying out the full range of pest control work, disinfecting work and drain testing in an effective and efficient manner and in accordance with all set procedures.

To carry out all duties in accordance with specified time and quality targets.

Summary of responsibilities and personal duties

1. To carry out a programme of pest control work including, in particular:-

– destruction of rodents, insects and other pests and all related tasks

– disinfection and disinfestation of lands, premises, persons, clothing, furnishings, belongings and other items

– testing of sewers and drains, providing advice on the practicalities of testing to Environmental Health Officers as required

– sewer treatment, including supervisory duties.

2. To undertake disinfection and disinfestation duties, including:-

– destruction of rodents, insects and other pests and related tasks

– relief duty and searching of ships at the port

– to test sewers and drains

– control of mosquitoes and flies

– laying bait and poison as required.

3. To maintain records relating to work carried out as required and to provide reports as required.

4. To participate as required in student training programmes.

5. To liaise with maintenance staff of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Housing Associations and other organisations as required.

6. To participate in all induction and in-service training provided by Belfast City Council and in the induction and support of all newly appointed staff and other human resource management policies and procedures, as appropriate, including, absence management, disciplinary and grievance procedure.

7. To participate as directed in the Council’s recruitment and selection procedures.

8. To act in accordance with the council and departmental policies and procedures including customer care, equal opportunities, health and safety, safeguarding and any pertinent legislation.

Qualifications and experience

Applicants must, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms:

· have a full, current driving licence (B category) which enables them to drive in Northern Ireland or have access to a form of transport which enables them to meet the requirements of the post in full[1];

· have a minimum of five GCSEs (grades A-C) including English, or equivalent qualifications; and

· have a relevant qualification such as BPC/RSPH (Level 2) Certificate in Pest Control or equivalent.

Applicants must also be able to demonstrate, by providing personal and specific examples on the application form, that they have, as at the closing date for receipt of application forms, at least one year’s relevant experience in each of the following areas:

(i) pest control operations, programmes or treatments of insects that pose a risk to public health; and

(ii) dealing directly with members of the public.
