BSNI is working with BCC to recruit and experienced Environmental Health Officer, this is a temporary role.

Location:  Belfast

Duration:  Temporary for one month and maybe extended

Salary:  £16.12

 

To be responsible to the Principal Environmental Health Officer (Environmental Protection, Public Health and Housing) or appropriate manager to assist in the efficient and effective development and implementation of the council’s Oil Fuel Stamp Scheme. To assist the Home Safety Officer in the efficient and effective development, and implementation of the objectives of the Home Safety Check Scheme. To carry out home safety checks and deliver the appropriate equipment to qualifying households in Belfast and to assist in the coordination of educational outreach work including delivering safety presentations and workshops to community groups To develop and maintain high standards of service delivery, through partnership working with various agencies and external groups. To undertake all allocated tasks within agreed time and quality targets.

Summary of responsibilities and personal duties

Home Safety Checks

1.           To travel to private homes, using own vehicle, within the constituent council areas as part of the Belfast City Council Home Safety Check Scheme to carry out inspections for safety hazards, advise residents on home safety and testing smoke alarms, use of carbon monoxide detectors, etc based on current knowledge of risk and good practice

2.           To independently carry out a need’s assessment, provide approved equipment on this basis, and ensure that residents know how to use it safely to reduce their risk of accidental injury.

3.           To undertake regular stock taking to replenish and distribute heavy items i.e., fireguards, stairgates etc.

4.           To make appropriate referrals to other agencies such as NIFRS, Occupational Therapists, Warmer Homes, Social Services, Optimise, Good Morning Call Scheme, Living Well/Living Longer, Safe and Well, Sure Start, Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Police and Community Safety Partnership, Sensory Support Team and local councils on the basis of a needs assessment and with the consent of the resident.

5.           To maintain written records of each home safety visit and complete computer records for the RoSPA database (recording through Data Pen Project/iPad).

6.           To meet targets for home visits in each council area based on Service Level Agreements with Public Health Agency giving priority to those at most risk.

7.           To attend training sessions and meetings as required to include supporting Home Accident Prevention groups at local level.

8.           To support the Home Safety Officer in raising the profile of Home Safety issues.

9.           To support the Home Safety Officer with educational and promotional work related to Home Safety as part of an agreed programme of activities.
