Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary

Working in all weather conditions, the postholder will act as a plant operator and also as a work
team leader for staff whose responsibility include the maintenance of the full range of the
Councils parks, gardens, pitches and open spaces.

1. Drive and be responsible for allocated vehicles and attachments. Duties will include
vehicle/equipment checks, required routine maintenance (for example oil and water
checks) and cleaning, transportation of goods equipment and personnel, assisting in the
loading and unloading of vehicles using mechanical aids where appropriate, completion

Plant Operator (Gardening)
Job Description

Familiarity in the use of telecommunications equipment in accordance with Road Traffic Legislation.
2. Undertake work in public parks, playing fields, landscaped areas and similar open spaces, ie general maintenance of these areas e.g. grass cutting, hedge trimming, clearing leaves and litter, constructional labouring work, erection and dismantling of sports and other equipment, cleaning e.g. Council buildings such as changing rooms and toilets.
3. Patrol and attendance activities eg. Collection and issuing of tickets and maintenance of orderly conduct by the public.
4. Horticultural operations e.g. planting, pruning and seeding, grounds maintenance eg basic setting out and marking of sports areas and where appropriate chemical control under direction.
5. Assistance to squads and teams with skilled tasks eg. Assistance with propagation and
nursery care of plants, site preparation and construction.
6. Operate powered hand tools and light plant machinery, including the operation of tractor-mounted equipment, including 5 gang mowers, spikes, land levelers and mechanical diggers.
7. Undertake activities largely utilising craft skills e.g interpretation of plans, site preparation and construction, soft and hard landscaping and setting out of pitches, tree care and propagation.
8. Work with minimum supervision and be responsible for the direction of the work of trainers and/or other employees assigned to them.
9. Liaise with the Pitch Attendants in regard to playing surface conditions and pitch availability for bookings.
10. Attend the Court of Law to defend the Councils actions, as and when required.
11. Patrol and attendance activities, maintain and enforce Council bylaws, collection and issuing of tickets, and maintenance of orderly conduct by the public.
12. Carry out chemical spraying and other duties which include top dressing, verticutting/draining, over-seeding and fertilizing.

General
1. Carry out duties in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Order 1978 (as amended); Acts of Parliament; Statutory Instruments and Regulations and other legal requirements; and all Council Policies and Procedures including Dignity at Work, Health and Safety, Attendance and all relevant Codes of Conduct.
2. Undertake the duties in such a way as to enhance and promote the positive reputation of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.
3. Lead by example by behaving at all times in accordance with the Councils values and promote same within the organisation and externally.
4. Undertake all aspects of work respecting confidentiality and ensure that personal and/or sensitive information under the control or access of the postholder is used, stored and maintained in accordance with relevant data protection legislation.
5. Contribute to Corporate, Departmental and Regional working groups as required.
6. Participate in the Councils Recruitment and Selection processes as a panel member, including assisting the panel with development of person specification, identifying selection methods and adhering to advice given regarding current employment legislation and codes of practice.
7. When required, assist in the execution of the Councils Emergency and Business Continuity Plans.
