Refuse and Cleansing Supervisor Based in Council offices in Newry or Downpatrick this post will work across the Council District of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council.

Casual N/A Non-Excepted Sustainability and Environment/Waste Management Working within the Environmental Cleansing Service (Refuse Collection) the postholder will be required to provide, in a safe and effective manner, a quality and effective refuse collection service including all recycling collection activities, in all weather conditions.

Normally working in a squad environment, the postholder shall be expected to interact with and deal with the public in a courteous and appropriate manner in relation to recycling and shall be assigned to refuse collection duties, throughout the Council District as per letter of offer.

Duties and Responsibilities

1 2 Undertake, either individually or as a member of a team, duties connected with the removal of household, industrial, commercial and recyclable refuse from a variety of locations, e.g. houses, shops, schools.

This could involve the full use of refuse containers, e.g. plastic sacks, wheelie bins, and paladin bins. In the absence of a regular driver or service reserve driver, ensure all collections are provided in the appropriate sequence and ensure that such staff undertake tasks in accordance with Council’s Procedures and Policies.

Assist the assigned driver, as requested, to manoeuvre the vehicle, provided training has been given. Clear up spillage, loose refuse and litter in any area arising from the Refuse Collection Service i.e. use of Sharp Kits.

Report bins damaged or not emptied to the Team Leader.

Report any premises that appear to have a refuse disposal problem to the Team Leader. Notify the occupants of premises as to any change with collection requirements through an appropriate system. Operation of any associated apparatus and safety equipment, fitted to the vehicle assigned. Identify any public safety hazards and other issues that detrimentally affect the appearance of the environment and to report same to the Team Leader.

Identify and report any public safety hazard relating to the service to the Team Leader on a daily basis. Responsible for the use of telecommunications equipment assigned to the vehicle, in accordance with Road Traffic Legislation. Interact and advise members of the public in relation to recycling issues in a manner consistent with best customer service and in accordance with section protocols. Participate in Street Cleansing duties as and when required, namely to undertake, either individually or as a team member of a mechanised cleansing team, duties concerned with the sweeping, collection and removal of litter, dirt, dead animals, leaves and weeds etc, from public spaces (including roads, pavements and shopping precincts). These duties will require the use and operation of the usual range of associated tools and equipment (e.g. Sharpe Kits) and regular inspection and emptying of litter bins.
